Introducing A2AJ — Open Canadian Legal Data for All

# Introducing A2AJ — Open Canadian Legal Data for All

Today we are excited to publicly launch the Access to Algorithmic Justice (A2AJ) project — a new initiative to make Canadian legal information freely and openly available to everyone.

Our Mission

Legal information in Canada has long been fragmented across government websites, locked behind expensive commercial databases, or simply difficult to find and use. A2AJ changes that by providing free, programmatic access to Canadian legal data in formats designed for researchers, developers, and the public.

What's Available

At launch, our datasets include:

  • 116,000+ court and tribunal decisions from jurisdictions across Canada
  • 5,000+ federal statutes and regulations, fully consolidated
  • Bilingual full text in English and French where available

How to Access the Data

We've built multiple access methods to suit different needs:

  • REST API — Query with filters, full-text search, and structured responses
  • Parquet Files — Download complete datasets for local analysis
  • Hugging Face Datasets — Load directly into machine learning pipelines

Who We Are

A2AJ is co-hosted by Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Toronto Metropolitan University, with generous support from the Law Foundation of Ontario.

Get Involved

We believe open legal data is a foundation for access to justice. Whether you're a researcher, developer, student, or community organization, we invite you to explore our data and build with us.
