Osgoode JD RA: IP & Open Legal Data

The Access to Algorithmic Justice Project (A2AJ), in partnership with IP Osgoode, is seeking a JD student at Osgoode Hall Law School with an interest in intellectual property (IP) law and access to justice to join our team as a Student Research Assistant.

About the Access to Algorithmic Justice Project
A2AJ is an interdisciplinary research initiative funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario dedicated to advancing access to justice through the responsible development of artificial intelligence (AI) and open legal data infrastructure, with a particular focus on the needs of marginalized and low-income communities in Ontario. The project is co-hosted by York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School and Toronto Metropolitan University’s Lincoln Alexander School of Law.

Position Overview
We are building open-source Canadian legal datasets and advocating for policy and legal frameworks that support fair, transparent, and public-minded AI innovation. One critical area of our work is developing robust legal and policy arguments for open access to Canadian legal information, and clarifying the intellectual property (IP) implications of legal documents, datasets, and related resources.

We invite applications from Osgoode JD students who are interested in the intersection of intellectual property law, technology, and access to justice, and who wish to contribute to policy work with real-world impact.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work closely with A2AJ researchers, partners at IP Osgoode, and supervising faculty to:

  • Research and analyze the intellectual property dimensions of legal data and open access initiatives in Canada and internationally;
  • Assist in drafting legal and policy documents, including memos, reports, and advocacy materials, relating to the ownership, licensing, and sharing of legal data;
  • Support the development of frameworks that balance public access, privacy, and intellectual property interests in legal information;
  • Contribute to planning and supporting events on issues related to open legal data and AI;
  • Participate in regular project meetings and collaborative brainstorming sessions.

  • Experience with legal research databases and comfort with reading legal/policy materials
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
